The Origins of Polish Orthopaedics (plik PDF)
Autor: Artur Dziak
There is every justification to claim that surgical science was practised in Poland as early as the 16th century, when Józef Struoe (1510-1568), Jan Jonston (1603-1675) and Jan Adam Kulmus (1689-1745), offering what surgery was possible at that time, were the precursors of what later became orthopaedics.
More specifically, it was in the second half of the 18th century that orthopaedics emerged as a separate branch of Polish medicine. The first orthopaedist in Poland was Ludwik Perzyna (1742-1812) of Cracow, member of the Order of Brothers Hospitallers at the hospital of St. John of GOD.
